When are pumpkins in season in the US?

Iowa State Extension calls October pumpkin season, and Illinois Extension times harvest for late September to early October. Extension guides put field harvest in late September to early October when vines stay healthy, before a hard freeze. Ripeness is about color and rind hardness, not the calendar alone — ask your local patch for this year’s dates.

Harvest window

Illinois Extension says that if vines remain healthy, harvest in late September or early October, before heavy frosts. Iowa State Extension’s Yard and Garden pages call October pumpkin season and tell growers to harvest mature fruit before a hard freeze. A light frost can kill vines without ruining fruit; a hard freeze can damage the fruit. Farther south the calendar differs, so check with a local farm.

How to tell a pumpkin is ready

Illinois Extension: harvest when the fruit is a deep, solid color (orange for most varieties) and the rind is hard. Iowa State: uniform orange color and a hard rind. Penn State Extension (garden guidance) similarly looks for variety-correct color across the fruit and a hard shell that resists a fingernail. Cut with shears or a knife and leave about 3 to 4 inches of stem; Illinois and Iowa State both warn that pumpkins without stems usually keep poorly, and that you should not carry the fruit by the stem.

Cure and store

Iowa State Extension: after harvest, cure at about 80–85°F and 80–85% relative humidity to harden skins and heal small scratches, then store at 50–55°F in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place. Keep pumpkins in a single layer, not touching, and away from ripening apples or pears (ethylene shortens storage life). Properly cured and stored fruit may keep about 2 to 3 months. Illinois Extension stores at 50–55°F in a dry building and discards injured or immature fruit.

At the market this month

Choose firm, heavy fruit with uniform color and an intact stem. Avoid cuts, soft spots or a spongy rind (Iowa State selection notes). Jack-o’-lantern types and pie types are different jobs — canned “pumpkin” is often other winter squash such as Dickinson / moschata types, per Iowa State, so cooking quality is not guaranteed from a carving pumpkin.

What to cook alongside

Roasted squash and fall roots pair with the same cool-weather markets. See how to store winter squash, the October produce guide, and roasted Brussels sprouts while stalks are in season.
